Yesterday was a long day. We dropped Maria off at school, went to the student mass (the kids were really good, but it's still exhausting), caught up on some laundry and cleaning, went back to get Maria, drove up to Moscow only to find out my class was cancelled, drove back to Lewiston, went for a quick swim at Papa and Lala's, and went home. The kids were so good all day so we decided to take them here:
That's right, folks. We took them to the county fair.
We started out inside. Inside they have all the exhibits. They have all kinds of categories from jams and cookies to quilts to gift baskets and, my personal favorite (*cough* probably because we got ribbons in it last year *cough*), the vegetables.
...because the kids were running off, exploring on their own. Not a good idea considering there are lots of unguarded veggies and flowers displayed. Like this giant sunflower. I wanted to pick all those seeds out of it and eat them, but I think that's frowned upon.
Then he came across the Lego displays. He's turned into a Lego boy. Papa and Lala go out all of my brothers' (and mine...we all shared toys, it's true) Legos at their house for the kids to play with and Jamie loves them. I didn't know he loved them as much as he did until he demanded we look at every. single. lego display. BOOORRRRRIIIINNNNGGGGG.
Then we went outside. Outside they have LOTS of booths with lots of different people selling things. There are some very nice bedazzled belts and shirts, about 5,000 "fresh squeezed lemonade" stands, and my favorite of the night, mini donuts. They were really really good. But the kids liked the bungee "ride." I cannot believe they went on it.
You get strapped in to this thing and they bounce you really really high. The kids weight about 10 lbs each, so they just flew.
Then it was time to eat. Because it's always a good idea to grab some great carnival/fair food right before you hit up the rides. The rides that sound a little off and smell the same....
Anyway, we got some food. Food irks me and I never eat anything that might even be close to being questionable. So, on our trip to the carnival, I ate Happy Day. The 100% safe option. Alice seemed to like it and so did the kids.
Dan, on the other hand, didn't want to order Happy Day's corndog. He wanted the "real, hand dipped" corn dog. Before I would even consider this, I'd demand to see the hands that were dipping the corn dog and then offer them a healthy dollop of hand sanitizer. But not Dan. He stood in line for 15 minutes for this:
FINALLY it was ride time. Tickets were $1 each (that doesn't sound like very much, but when each ride is at LEAST 3 tickets, that adds up...) and we only got 20. Maybe when they're older, their grandparents will take them and buy them wristbands. My grandma used to always take us and we'd get wristbands which was such a ripoff because I probably would have been fine with 6 tickets, tops. But my grandma was awesome and of course thought we needed the wristband. Okay, so anyway, we got tickets and Maria was quite proud of them.
This is a tiny, rickety little roller coaster that looks so dangerous. Oh, and it was dangerous. As Jamie was stepping into it, it started to roll. Yes, it started to roll, like it was going to start rolling full speed. The guy operating it didn't seem too concerned and just flipped the switch to stop it, but good lord, I about had a heart attack. The kids could not have cared less. They hopped in that tiny dragon:
....and it actually made me cry a little. On the inside. But still. I can't even tell you how happy it makes me to see him so happy.
And I hope he feels this way all the time, even if he doesn't always show it.
And Maria deserves the "Best Big Sister in the Entire Universe and the Galaxy" award because of the way she treats Jamie. She held his hand the whole time. She makes me so happy.
Out of the two of us, Danny is by far the funnest parent. He took them on the ferris wheel. Yes, the dangerous contraption that looks like it might break if you sneezed on it. He did it, he went on it. And he is crazy. And I am crazy for letting my kids on that thing! Ah, I can't believe I did that, but if I think any more about it, I might have a panic attack, so let's move on...
And after 3 minutes it was over. Probably actually 2. They are stingy with their ride time. Probably because tickets are $1 each....they just want you go buy more. We aren't stupid.....
....well maybe we are a little bit because we didn't exactly do our math correctly. If each ride is at least 3 tickets, then 20 tickets will leave you 1 ticket short for a ride....Danny's a sucker and went and bought one more so Jamie and Maria could be policemen in helicopters.
